Why the 5050 RGB Chip at 60 LEDs/m?

The 5050 chip measures 5.0 mm × 5.0 mm — larger than common 2835 chips. The larger surface area helps dissipate heat and minimises the chances of a heat-induced colour change over time.

The result is a good blend of light output and heat control at 60 LEDs per metre. This removes the obvious hotspot effect that is typical for 30 LEDs/m strips mounted in shallow aluminium profiles, providing a continuous, level stream of light with no dark intervals between spots.

When mounted on an aluminum profile, junction temperature stays below 65 °C, supporting the rated L70 > 50,000-hour lifespan.

Key Technical Properties

The 10 mm PCB uses a 2-ounce rolled-annealed copper trace, which supports efficient current flow and reduces the risk of PCB overheating under sustained operation.

Color consistency is managed through a MacAdam Ellipse binning process (SDCM < 5). Output stays consistent across multiple reels, which is relevant in commercial installations where visual uniformity across a large run is required.

For DC24V configurations, voltage drop is significantly reduced compared to DC12V, allowing continuous runs of up to 10 meters without brightness decay at the far end.

Application Scenarios

Architectural cove and crown molding lighting — The 60-LED density produces a smooth, uninterrupted light line in ceiling recesses, with no uneven patches between individual LEDs.

Commercial retail displays — The 5050 RGB chip's colour saturation is perfect for jewellery counters, technology exhibits, and gallery walls. Output level is 14.4 W/m which is enough to keep its presence against above ambient illumination.

Outdoor facades and maritime situations - The 60LEDs/m 5050 RGB strip with IP67 silicone extrusion or IP68 PU resin withstands UV exposure, thermal cycling and salt-spray conditions when enclosed. It is utilised for outdoor signs and for architectural works on the waterfront.

Entertainment and hospitality – This strip offers a practical choice for dynamic colour sceneries in bars, hotels, and event venues, thanks to its smart controller compatibility.

RGB LED Strip Application

Quality Control

ElisaLED applies structured inspection protocols to each production batch:

  • Copper foil thickness test — Cross-section analysis confirms 2 oz trace thickness, preventing thermal buildup during sustained use.
  • Spectrophotometer integration sphere test — Verifies total luminous flux and checks wavelength accuracy across all three color channels.
  • 3M adhesive shear strength test — Confirms that 3M 300LSE or VHB backing maintains adhesion at operating temperatures.
  • Salt spray and UV aging test — For IP-rated versions, checks that encapsulation material does not yellow or degrade over time.
  • Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) — Detects cold solder joints that could fail during installation or thermal cycling.

Standard production validation also includes aging tests, waterproof testing, photometric testing, and environmental reliability testing.

FAQ

Q:What distinguishes the product from other strips in the range?

A:This strip produces full RGB color only. Other variants address distinct use cases: 120LEDs/m 2835 for high-density single white; 120LEDs/m 2-in-1 Dual White for adjustable CCT; 5050 RGBW for RGB plus a dedicated white channel; and 5050 RGBCCT for RGB plus tunable warm and cool white.

Q:When should I choose 24V over 12V?

A:DC24V halves the current relative to DC12V, which significantly reduces voltage drop over longer runs. Continuous runs of up to 10 meters are practical without brightness decay at the far end. For most commercial installations, DC24V is the preferred configuration.

Q:Where can I cut the strip?

A:The strip has defined cut marks — every 5 cm for DC12V (3 LEDs per segment) or every 10 cm for DC24V (6 LEDs per segment). Cut only at the marked lines to avoid damaging the circuit.

Q:What power supply size is needed for a 5-meter reel?

A:At 14.4 W/m, a 5-meter reel draws 72 W. Applying a standard 20% safety margin, a 100 W power supply is the appropriate size for this configuration.

Q:What should I review before selecting an LED strip?

A:Consider LED density, power consumption, voltage, color or white lighting requirements, control system compatibility (RGB, RGBW, RGBCCT, or CCT), IP rating for the installation environment, and the cut interval needed for the specific installation.

Q:How do I maintain color consistency over long installations?

A:Use a signal amplifier (repeater) every 5–10 meters and apply parallel power injection along the run. This keeps RGB color mixing consistent from the start to the end of the full installation length.
